Village of Red Hook Police
The overall responsibility for the operation of
the Red Hook Police Department is assigned to
the part-time Chief of Police as selected and
appointed by the Mayor and the Board of trustees
for the Village of Red Hook. The day-to-day
supervision of department officers is provided
by the full-time Police Sergeant who works
closely with the Chief to ensure that the
mission, goals, objectives, and supporting daily
activities of the organization are accomplished
in a balanced and effective manner.
Jim Truitt is a life-long
resident of Dutchess County. Chief Truitt has
been serving continuously in various fields of
public service and law enforcement since first
joining the United States Coast Guard after his
high school graduation in 1980. While serving in
USCG, he performed search and rescue and federal
law enforcement duties on both the Atlantic and
Pacific coasts and was selected and trained as a
full-time Coast Guard Instructor serving in
Yorktown Virginia. After four years of active
service with the USCG, he joined the Dutchess
County Sheriff's Office where he was employed as
a Corrections Officer until he was hired as a
Police Officer by the Town of Poughkeepsie in
1986.
While serving 20 years with the Town of
Poughkeepsie Police as an officer and a police
sergeant he was selected and trained in a wide
variety of functions and specialties by the
Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of
Homeland Security, and the New York State
Division of Criminal Justice Services. During
this time of police service he received over
2,000 hours of advanced training in a broad
range of topics such as supervision,
instructional development, emergency response
tactics, criminal investigations, crime scene
investigations, command decision making,
incident command, and police ethics. During his
20 year career with The Town of Poughkeepsie, he
was assigned to develop and teach law
enforcement topics to new and in-service
officers throughout the Mid-Hudson Valley.
Chief Truitt attended Hyde Park schools and
graduated from F.D. Roosevelt High School. Chief
Truitt also received a formal college education
earning undergraduate degrees in Criminal
Justice, and Police Science. He then went on to
earn a Master of Public Administration (MPA)
degree with a specialty in Management and
Operations from John Jay College of Criminal
Justice. Immediately upon retirement from the
Town of Poughkeepsie in 2006, Chief Truitt was
hired as a full-time Assistant Professor of
Criminal justice at SUNY Ulster in Stone Ridge.
Currently, he is a tenured Associate Professor
and serves as the Department Chairperson for the
Department of Criminal Justice & Public Safety.
Chief Truitt moved to the Village of Red Hook
with his family in 2004 and remains active in a
variety professional, public safety,
educational, community, and school based
organizations and committees.

Patrick Hildenbrand is a life-long resident
of Red Hook and Dutchess County. Patrick comes
from a long line of family members that have
lived and served in the Red Hook community for
many years. Patrick attended and graduated from
the Red Hook school system where he was actively
involved in athletics. After High School, he
attended college in Florida, and at SUNY Ulster.
Patrick first joined the Red Hook Police
Department as a part-time Police Officer in 2006
and was appointed as a full-time Police Officer
in 2008. In 2009, Patrick was promoted to
provisional sergeant and after successfully
passing a civil service Police Sergeant
examination was appointed to the permanent
position in 2010.
Sergeant Hildenbrand has completed advanced
training in patrol tactics, police supervision,
crime scene photography, crime scene & evidence
specialist, drug interdiction, impaired driver
recognition, breath test operator, and drug
identification.
